Core Overview

Deltamethrin is a secondary metabolite produced by the soil actinomycete Saccharopolyspora spinosa through fermentation. It is not a traditional chemically synthesized pesticide but a representative of biopesticides. Its most significant feature is its highly effective insecticidal activity while being very safe for mammals, birds, and most beneficial insects.

Mechanism of Action

● Targets: It acts on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors.

● Process: When insects consume or come into contact with deltamethrin, it continuously activates the acetylcholine receptors on neurons, keeping the nerve cells in a constant state of excitation. At the same time, it also affects GABA-gated chloride channels.

● Result: This dual action leads to excessive excitation of the insect's nervous system, causing involuntary contractions and tremors in the muscles throughout the body. Eventually, the insect becomes paralyzed, stops feeding, and dies within 1-2 days.

Due to its unique target sites, it has no cross-resistance with conventional organophosphates, carbamates, and pyrethroids, making it an excellent choice for controlling resistant pests.

Main Characteristics

● High Efficiency: It has extremely high activity against various Lepidoptera, thrips, leafminers, etc., and can achieve good results with a small amount.

● Low Toxicity: It has extremely low toxicity to mammals, even lower than that of many salts. This allows it to be safely used in the pre-harvest period of crops.

● Environmentally Friendly:

Safe for Natural Enemies: It has little harm to beneficial insects such as ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitoid wasps, which is beneficial for ecological balance.

Easy Degradation: It can be rapidly photodegraded and biodegraded in the environment (soil, water), with low residues and minimal pollution.

Persistence: It has a medium persistence period, usually 5-7 days. Due to its rapid degradation, it needs to be reapplied based on the occurrence of pests.

Mode of Action: It has stomach and contact toxicity but no systemic activity. Therefore, when spraying, it is necessary to cover the parts where pests feed (such as both sides of leaves).

Main Pest Control Targets

● Thrips: It is one of the most core and effective agents for controlling thrips at present.

● Lepidoptera Pests: Such as diamondback moth, beet armyworm, cabbage worm, tobacco budworm, etc. (The effect on older larvae may be reduced).

● Leafminers: Such as serpentine leafminer, leafminer moth, etc.

● Others: It is also effective against some beetles and Diptera pests.

Precautions for Use

● No Systemic Activity: When spraying, it must be done evenly and thoroughly, covering both sides of the leaves and the hiding places of pests.

● Moderate Speed of Action: Pests will not die immediately after poisoning but will stop feeding quickly. Do not mistake this for poor efficacy and reapply the pesticide.

● Resistance Risk: Although its mechanism of action is unique, long-term single use may still lead to pest resistance. It is recommended to alternate or mix it with pesticides of different mechanisms of action.

● Impact on Bees: Although it is safe for most beneficial insects, deltamethrin is highly toxic to bees. It should be avoided during the flowering period of crops or after bees have collected nectar.

● Compatibility: It can be mixed with most pesticides, but it is recommended to conduct small-scale tests first. Avoid mixing it with strongly alkaline pesticides.
